I know it’s just one among thousands of sock systems employed by large families far and near. But this is the system I began when our children were just wee bitty, and it’s the one we still use today.
Like any good system, it’s simple so it works!
It’s no exaggeration to say that these Gold Toe brand socks have changed my life. No more sorting or stacking or looking for pairs. When I pull out a sock from the dryer, I throw it in the sock bin and call it a day. The gray differentiates the boys from the girls. The stripes differentiate size.
When my children need socks, they simply find the appropriate striped sock x 2.
Gold Toe brand socks can be found in many stores, but I buy ours at Target. If they ever discontinue them I think I’ll cry.

All Hot Lips' dress socks are made by Gold Toe, too. However, after he looked down at his crossed feet one day while seated on a church platform, he discovered he was wearing navy blue socks with a black suit. How to prevent that from reoccurring? I stitched red thread "whiskers" in the toes of the navy socks. I also gently tie these navy socks in a loose knot. No second guessing. The red threads help me on laundry day and the knot helps him select the navy he needs.
ReplyDeleteFor us, Gold Toe's the best, and after reading your post, I'll encourage every young mother to invest in their socks for your reasons x 2!
I love this idea! I will definitely keep this tip in mind for when we plan to expand our fam. No more folding/sorting socks for me! Yay!
ReplyDeletePlease tell me these are brand new socks... My boy's socks are gray after one use... sigh. I have never seen this brand but I will absolutely look for them. Today!
ReplyDeletecute idea!! and love your washroom!!!
ReplyDeleteWOW! You are a genius and I am sure that Mom's with kids are going to be forever indebted to you! Gold Toe needs to pay you some money! :-)
ReplyDeleteWe use gold toes in our house too. Not only are they genius for multiple feet households, but they are amazing quality. They cost a tad more than Hanes but are sooo much more durable and long lasting. Im a bit OCD and still match everyone socks up for them! I must do the bin trick like you....maybe if my laundry room looked like yours?! ;)

ps - just got my daughter a new pink set at Target yesterday!!
You are so smart! Why didn't I have this system when my kids were younger?
ReplyDeletexoxo Dianne
How on earth do you keep their socks white?
ReplyDeleteI buy this exact sock for my boys - well just one and the other gets a different brand - I admit - I had no idea they were coded! Thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! I buy these socks and had NO idea you could differentiate like that!!!! FABULOUS!
ReplyDeleteRIE:
ReplyDeleteI want to move into your house.....PLEASE!!!!!
Genius! I love it in all its simplicity. And how white they are!! :)
ReplyDeletethis is a genius idea! I so wish something similar would exist outside of the US...
ReplyDeleteYes, the socks on top are new. I promise there are dingy ones in there, although a soak in oxyclean really does magic.

If you live outside the U.S... another idea is to buy all the same brand and color of socks in different sizes and use a permanant marker to put your own stripes or dots on the toes.

Stealing this idea asap! Wish I had known this tip years ago! :)
ReplyDeleteMy three boys all wear the same socks from Target, and for the same reason you guys do! They save me SO much time when sorting, and the kids can find their own!
ReplyDeleteWay to go.... it's simple and a great idea!
ReplyDeleteCheryl
Genius! I love it.
ReplyDeleteExcellent..What a great idea..

How did I not know this all these years? This is brilliant, plus love your laundry room or wash room...not sure. Went back to look and do not see the W/D and I'm pretty sure with how white those socks are you're not hand washing them...ha
ReplyDeleteSo smart! And loved getting a peak at your beautiful laundry room again!
ReplyDeleteI love the sock bins! And your laundry room is so cute!
ReplyDeletedon't know if i've ever left word of my presence here...but hello! your blog is lovely and always enjoy my visits :)
ReplyDeleteOh wow, thanks for sharing this! Finally, a sock company that is out to help us moms with the laundry! I will be buying these for my family this weekend.
ReplyDeleteI want to know, too, how you keep your socks so white. I'm guessing it has to do with you keeping your floors cleaner than mine. ; )
ReplyDeleteok. I am so intrigued and want to steal this idea!! Do YOU add the stripes, or do they come like that? Brilliant!

Oh my. I think this is going to change my life forever. I only have three children, and socks are my lest favorite thing in the world. Thank you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteleast I mean... oops!
ReplyDeleteOh my word you just solved a huge sock problem I have in our home!!! I have three girls who all need white socks but they all wear a different size....this is brilliant!!!

xo,LuLu
Oh my goodness! I just found your blog and am totally in love. Your house, ideas, and decorating are so wonderful. Thank you so much for such a great blog!
ReplyDeletethis is news to me....and i think you've positively made my day...
ReplyDeletegold toe socks it is!
We don't have those socks in Australia, boo hoo, but I did recently buy for my husband black socks, a set of 5 pairs, each pair with it's own colour heel and toe. Which speeds up laundry sorting! I think next year when my girls are both wearing the same school socks I will try the dot system again ....
ReplyDeleteAlways love seeing your laundry ...
pure genius! I am sooo going to implement this system. I am forever trying to track down missing socks. I love that you just have a bin for each person and they do their own tracking! TFS :)
ReplyDeleteGotta go and get some real soon. We have a large family ,too and the socks are always a headache. Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea, but PLEASE tell me those were new socks you photographed! I only have 3 girls and yet, their socks get so filthy they won't even come clean after the first wearing (how embarrassing to admit!). I also struggle with throwing old socks away. Why do I hang on to them so?
ReplyDeleteThis is so amazing! I have so many extra socks sitting around that don't have mates, I didn't know how to figure out a system. Tried the different colors, etc. But, having two girls...that was impossible! Thank you so much for this!
ReplyDeleteEven if you did want to pair them and sort them into respective dresser drawers...Makes for an easy chore for even the youngest children. :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome.
ReplyDeleteHave never seen this brand, but will look harder. We take a permanent marker and draw shapes or sizes on the bottom when they are new. Same concept--they can then match their own!
ReplyDeleteI loved the gold toe socks, too, until my girls moved on to colors. But now the in thing is to where mismatched socks - so it still works to throw everything in and pull 2 out!
ReplyDeleteThis is the answer to my prayers! I'll be sending my mom to target to buy socks for the kids today. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, but I also wanted to tell you I adore your laundry room!
ReplyDeleteAll the comments about keeping socks white reminded me that I want to buy some Mrs. Stewart's bluing to use on my whites.
